From gearheads to complete newbies, the Canadian International Auto Show is one of the most heavily attended expos in Toronto. With an entire day devoted to new lineup reveals and press conferences, this event can teach us a thing or two (or four) about pulling off an engaging press conference.
Be conscious of your background
At the auto show media day, it’s all about the theatrics and the big reveal. A large LED wall or elaborate set design with the dramatic car reveal comes standard. So whether you’re sharing a new product or a new partnership, presenting to the media is everything. From the steps of parliament hill to full-blown, custom-made backdrop, opting for a background that is more visually stimulating, helps focus attention to the presenter and promotes your message will take your press conference to the next level.
Rehearsal is important
Practice makes perfect, but press conferences are live, so rehearsal is integral to being able to anticipate any challenges. This seems like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised by how much rehearsal time gets taken up by other tasks that are seemingly more “pressing”. But as we have seen from the Auto Show press conferences, they are a well-rehearsed dance that anticipates its audience and knows when to go for the big finish.
Media pool feeds are vital
Perhaps this should be at the top of the list, but media feeds are something that is often seen as optional. This couldn't be further from the truth. If you have media at your event, they are essential. Media feeds are low-cost, and they ensure that all media outlets from local news to car blogs and vlogs, enthusiasts receive clear, crisp audio. Providing an ample number of mic, line and ⅛” connections without noise, buzzing or humming are critical.
Imagine 100+ members of the media clamouring to get the best picture or video for their news segment. This isn't possible if all they can see is the back of the heads in front of them. Consider the position of your speaker or the layout of the room. Leaving aisles clear between seating allows for camera operators to navigate smoothly or elevating the speaker so that everyone will have a clear view. Often a media riser will be installed to additionally elevate news cameras. And finally, proper event lighting to satisfy the broadcast camera operators must be considered.
Each media outlet that attends press conferences such as CIAS media day represents potentially thousands or millions of viewers. Mistakes or blemishes will be noticed and are not acceptable.
